Poley-Levitt Full Circle....

Full Circle Neve Monosson Library Visit

I have decided to activate this blog.  I guess I stopped writing because of the family connections I have through Facebook, but I am really disappointed with that media.  I will publish the link there so that family connections will be able to follow and subscribe.  It will be mainly family oriented a bit of family history and genealogy, current events etc.... If there is a special event connected with family that you would like me to publish I would be glad to do it.

Well what prompted this change after silence for almost 3 years... a recent visit with my second cousin Janet Slovin and her husband Gil.  Our Poley grandmothers were sisters.. and in 2010 Janet donated a gift  from the estate of Alfred Levitt.  So last Monday I met up with Janet and Gil near the Habima Square and we spent the day in Tel Aviv visiting the Carmel Market, Neve Tzedek, and the Ha Tachana.  In the late afternoon we took the shuttle to Shapirim which is 10 minutes from Neve Monosson for a quick tour and visit to to the library.. The shuttle also brought them back to Tel Aviv...

Library Gift from the Late Alfred Levitt

About a 1 1/2 years ago I was contacted by my second cousin,on my Poley side, Janet Slovin. Janet and her husband Gilbert are the trustees of the of the estate of the late Alfred Levitt Z"L who passed away in a tragic car accident on March 5 2008 on his way to work. from her post:
He was crossing the street in front of his office building and was hit by a car. He was 86, still going to work every day, leading an active life. It was a cruel irony of life that a man as gentle be struck down in such a violent way. He was mourned by his loving family, a host of friends, and hundreds of colleagues he had worked with over the years. He left some money to be donated to a good cause, and I ( My husband and I are trustees) would like to support (in a very modest way) a project in your town. I think it would be meaningful for Alfred to be associated with the Monosson family. Let me know if you have any ideas.

I suggested, after asking for advise, that the library be a possible candidate.. This was welcomed and after confirming the status of the library as a non-profit organization the library received a very generous gift of the sum of $2,500. A more than "modest gift".

Now to decide how to use this gift ...at first they wanted the local administrator for Neve Monosson to match the gift and to enable the library to renovate a storage area to add to the library... but of course as is well known squeezing funds from the city, we are part of greater Yahud area, is almost an impossible feat! So it was decided to add new shelving to the area for Travel books and guides to be named after Alfred Levitt. Finally after getting contract bids the shelves were ordered and recently set up. Not only the special travel corner but a huge shelve area for childrens' books at the entrance to the library.

Here are a few images of the new shelves. The clock will be replaced by a plaque dedicated to Alfred Levitt.

Large new shelves for children's section

With the remaining money books will be bought for both the English and Travel Guide sections...
A beautiful and wonderful gift  in the memory of Alfred Levitt and again emphasizing the strong bonds between the Poley and Monosson families.

Family Connections

Alfred was the son of Rose [Poley] and Max Levitt. Rose was the third daughter of Jacob and Mary Poley.  Image of the Poley Family in 1906 when the whole family reunited.

Two of the Poley sisters married two of the Monosson brothers. The two families resided in the same area of Boston and probably met at the many social events in the area, oral history from my late father Adolphe Monosson.  I have a photograph of  such a social gathering showing three of the Poley  sisters and David Monosson, not shown together in the image, David Monosson married Esther Poley and Fred Monosson married Minnie Poley. . Here is an image of all the Poley sisters with their sister-in-law Jean Poley who married their brother Abraham, Chick, Poley.

The Poley and Monosson connection was very strong. Max Levitt was a witness on both David and Fred's naturalizing documents along with another Poley brother-in-law Ruben Popkin husband of Sadie Poley.

My Grandparents Didn't Swim the Atlantic

For years I have been trying to locate my maternal grandparents,ARONSON,on the Ellis Island database with no success. My grandfather,Hyman Aronson, stated specifically that he arrived on July 23rd on the Rotterdam, but I had never found him on that or any other Rotterdam sailing for 1900. So I always joked that they swam over.

Here is the Immigration story on the new web site for my Aronson-Price families

Since I wrote that story I looked over my mother's birth certificate...which is also a story in itself and there I saw the letter "S" for my grandmother's middle name. So the mystery of who was Sore is solved... but why weren't they sailing as a a married couple.

Finding this certificate was very hard because my mother was named Bella and they changed it to Beatrice... not legally but by use, and note that the spelling of ARONSON was with an "E".
I believe that on my Aunt Lillian's birth certificate she was named Lena.

Marsha's Visit to Jerusalem

What a great visit. We had loads of fun and it was a wonderful reunion. Happy and sad at the same time. Happy to see Marsha after such a long time, fall 2002, and sad that my brother Gene, who passed away 3 years ago, wasn't with us. I was wearing his hat that Marsha lent me. Tomorrow off for a visit to Masada!!!

Leo Monosson Any Connection?

While veiwing the new English Monosson Trailer on YouTube

I noticed on the side bar several videos for a Leo Monosson,a singer and actor. Leo, born Leon in 1897, is the son of Isai Monosson and Malvina Szereszewki. For comparison my grandfather David was born in 1887,his brother Fred in 1892. A collection of the videos can be found on YouTube

Since I haven't been active in my genealogy research I corresponded with Michael to find out more information and he sent a descendant chart. Seems that I met his second wife Stephanie in Florida, another story, and his daughter Vera Monosson Steinfeld here in Tel Aviv and corresponded with her about the possible connection. So far we haven't been able to find the "link" both Michael and I both think that Leo's grandfather Leon, born beteeen 1835-1845 and our Gr-grandfather Abraham/Adolphe, born around 1847 were either siblings or cousins. Isai was a in the diamond business and sold stones to the famous Faberge. The families had close ties and Monosson is his private telephone directory. This fact we found out from a bit of professional research we did.

Michael sent me some images of Leo that he bought on Ebay a few years ago. Here is the sideshow.

Alex's Trip Summer 2008

Alex Scherzer asked me to share some of his images from his summer trip!!!

Here are some picture from my trip this summer. We began with a week in Europe, starting in Prague, Czech republic, exploring over 1000 years of Jewish history. Next, we traveled to Poland. We began in the city of Krakow, where we visited historic places such as Oskar Schindler's factory. Next, we went to the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps, one of the most moving and memorable moments of my life. After visiting the Warsaw ghetto, we arrived in Israel, where we spent the next 4 weeks of the summer. In Israel we had some of the greatest experiences of our lives, such as swimming in the dead sea, watching the sun rise at Masada, visiting the western wall, camping out in the Negev, riding camels, and so much more.

Farewell Asha

My younger sister Asha passed away ..... Saturday the 3rd of January a few weeks after her 61 birthday....in San Miguel, Mexico from complications that developed after an operation on a perforated ulcer..she developed septicemia and fluid in her lungs....Asha how can wish you farewell.... ??? In my mind you are still there at the other end of the world....and I am just waiting for another post with our special ending ..love'n' that we used to sign our posts to each other. Without a funeral and "Shiva" it is difficult to come to terms and make a closure. This I hope will help... a sort of virtual "Shiva"

Forgive me for not realizing just how ill you were....I did have a feeling that you were not recuperating from your operation and it was taking too long... wanted to contact you through Skype.... but unfortunately it wasn't possible... I think Irving was probably trying to spare me in this case..... so I didn't have a chance to really tell you how much I care and how much you will be missed.....

We lived in two different worlds... and a whole decade separated us... but we still found ways to communicate and find topics of mutual interest.... mainly our art connection.... through you I tried diddling in digital painting and took two courses with LVS.... it was a great step towards my continuing in the traditional manner with pencil and paints... when you were in a slump I tried to help you, maybe a bit too much, to get your creative juices running... just before your recent illness and operation you had begun a daily drawing sessions.... I hope that your site will continue to stay online.... Inkbridge being one of my favorites... I think because it reminds me of my mothers' paintings.

You were 7-8 when I left to make my new life in Israel.....when you were sixteen or so you visited Israel and spent a year here... even enrolled in Bazalel art school... but your heart was in other places .... and you returned home....
We corresponded sparingly through the years.. but it was really after my visit in 1979 with Naomi then 17 and Yael 12 that we really reconnected... and of course with the internet and e-mail flourished....

In fall 2004 we also visited you in Concord, Ca. where we spent a few days before our cross country trip back to the East... we all met Jill Hamada at the rental agency in Oakland... that was the last time I saw you... see picture from a previous post in 2006

Since that last visit we corresponded almost on a daily basis.. and while you were still in Ca. often had chats with Yahoo messenger... you met Amir ,my grandson though the cam camera.... my morning being your evening and vice versa.... the past 3 years since your move to Mexico didn't allow too many chats because of the timezone .....your dreams of a new life in Mexico were cut short.. but I pray you are in better paradise....

Asha also leaves Irving Kohn her life partner,Mica Dawn Valli her daughter,Larz and Michael her grandsons,Debbie Monosson McGuire her sister.

Farewell Asha

Love n' forever

Slow Cooker

Well this story begins with a slow cooker. We were in the local Home Center to buy a new headset for the TV and they had a sale on slow cookers.. something that I have been wanting to try. My daughter has one loves it... she makes her Cholent on it... they only had a small one 3.5 liter but I thought that would be enough for just us!!!! So we bought the small one with a promise that I would make Cholent this Shabbat!!!

Yacov then remembered that we had promised the first Cholent of the season to share with Lior at her base if she didn't have that Shabbat off ....See previous Coffee Break ... so I called Naomi.... yes she is at base this Shabbat but they transferred her to a new base and she hasn't visited her there so she doesn't know what picnic areas there are nearby.... but she "bought" my Cholent and since they were picking up Erez's father for Saturday lunch we decided to meet at the nearby Gan Yehoshua or Hayarkon Park in Tel Aviv for an afternoon picnic.....sorry Lior ...next time!!!

Well the small slow cooker wouldn't be big enough for all the takers.. so I used the my regular big stainless steel pot and made it on the stove.... and then in the oven over night....Here are a few pictures from a spontaneous Saturday outing!!! B' te avon!!!

Coffee Break

These were taken last October ..but better a bit late then not at all.

A visit with Lior near her base. During the holidays Lior didn't get much leave so during one of her breaks we all came and picked her up at her base for a coffee break at a near by picnic ground.

I have embedded the slide show. You can view full album by clicking under the slide show window on view album.

the email tab.... it shows you a special blog address with a window
for s secret word.... you can choose whether to directly publish of
save as draft.

We are all fine here... waiting for the winter to set in... a few weeks
ago we did have a few good days of rain but now its still sunny and
warm.... we really NEED that water.

Yacov had a cataract removed this week and is doing fine..... had a
little redness but its is clearing up..really dread when I will have
to do that procedure.

Ok now to see how this works!!!!!

..

Well the process went relatively well.... have to remember to send from my edanim account.... other wise I can't edit..still have to go into the dashboard and revise ..so we'll see how it all goes....

Happy New Year

It's that time of the year. A little nip in the air early morning, and light cool breeze in the evening. Fall is approaching and one has to watch quickly because here it passes by so fast you can hardly notice and hopefully winter rains will be here. One of the signs of the approaching fall is the Hatzav Matzui, Sea Squill,Medicinal squill,Urginea maritima which seems to bloom out of nowhere when everything is all brown and dried.

Sasha's Story

January 31, 2003

This attached story was handwritten on May 10, 1977 when I was 47 years old. Though I can't recollect exactly what prompted me to do it. I sort of think I had become aware of a small publication that printed "personal stories". For years I have been unable to find it though I doubted if I had thrown it away. Recently I had been searching for my brother's birth certificate - he was going off to the Dominican Republic on vacation - and it turned up. I cried when I finished reading it - It brought back so many memories. One thing to remember is that Sasha was older than her half brothers who had left Russia as young boys or men, so they had probably not lived with her very long before coming to this country.

THE SASHA STORY
by Rosalyn Monosson
Date: Saturday, February 01, 2003

There are conflicting stories of how Sasha came to this country. I had always thought that she was a prisoner in Siberia - released through the efforts of my uncle- interned in Japan and held for ransom. But when the family paid the ransom, she was allowed to come to this country. But in a chance conversation with an older cousin whom I rarely see, he mentioned that Aunt Sasha had walked across Siberia to freedom. Unfortunately, there is no one to ask, because all the principals in this drama are long since gone.

I was only about 11 when Aunt Sasha arrived - I think it was about Spring of 1941 and almost immediately it was whispered there was something wrong.

My first look at her was probably within a few days of her arrival and I remember very well how she looked - I doubt if she was five feet tall - but was very plump and sturdy - with a tremendous shapeless bosom that looked like she should topple forward - a tiny round reddish face with her hair pulled back in a bun.

Sasha didn't speak English and we didn't speak Russian so other than hand pats and kisses that smelled like lemons or oranges, we didn't have too much communication. Besides, the adults were monopolizing her. As a matter of fact, Sasha always smelled like lemons or oranges - later I was to know why. She had very soft skin and she attributed it to rubbing her skin with the rind of either or both of these fruits. Sasha had lots of "home" beauty or health treatments - cucumber slices on cuts - alcohol rubdowns as a regular routine - and of course the rinds.

We didn't see her too often in the beginning because she lived with either of my two uncles for a while - but when my Aunts could no longer bear her, she came to stay with us. It was our turn. The main problem with keeping Sasha was that she had arrived in this country with a disturbed mind. The whispered stories included a husband who had been shot while walking at her side on a Moscow street and her time spent interned in Siberia and Japan. When she landed in America, it was on the West Coast and she was taken to Seattle where her sister lived, only to find her sister had died before she got there. And on her arrival in Boston she found that my grandmother was also dead. Now my grandmother was her Stepmother and my father and his brothers were her half brothers, at least 20 years younger than she. So all these traumatic events had taken their toll and neither Sasha nor her half brothers were ever able to enjoy the relationship they had anticipated.

Sasha came to our house in the winter and by this time we were in the war. We lived on a street where there was a Public health hospital and it seemed like ambulances and hearses went by more than normal. Sasha had a terrible fear of both. She told us those were the cars they used to "take you away".

By this time we were all communicating a little better. Sasha carried several English foreign language dictionaries. She could speak German and French in addition to Russian and somehow or other she always managed to make herself understood. In retrospect, I think how difficult it must have been - in her 70's, in a strange country, with strangers for family and unable to speak the language. I'm afraid sometimes everyone was less than as kind as they might have been because they were so disappointed in her mental condition and because they couldn't cope.

But Sasha was a clever fox too. She knew money was the way to get around in this country and she learned early about taxicabs and used them as often as possible. One time she had an argument with my father and disappeared all weekend. But Sunday night about 7 o'clock a taxi pulled up at the door and Sasha and the drivergot out with what must have been ten dozen long stemmed gladiolus - so long stemmed that they seemed taller than she. It was a peace offering.

Now Sunday nights in our house were "open" to all my father's friends, their wives or whoever they brought with them. My father and a few particular cronies played pinochle surrounded by dishes of candy, dates, figs and nuts and huge bowls of fruit topped by bunches of grapes while the others just sat and talked or kibitzed the games. The women in the living room - the men in the kitchen. If I knew what it meant in those days, I would probably have described the whole scene as a salon.

I'm not sure if it was the same night as the flower peace offering, or another time - because all the Sunday nights run together in my mind, but a friend of my father brought his mother along - Mrs. Santarpio spoke only Italian which apparently was one of the few languages Sasha didn't speak, but they had no trouble communicating. Sasha entertained by playing the baby grand piano, her feet not even reaching the pedals, and she and Mrs. Santarpio sang together.

You could often tell Sasha's moods by how she played. Naturally she played only the classics, but if she was upset it was loud and booming and if she was in a better mood it was softer, lighter pieces.

She never totally accepted the American way of men talking to other men's wives without the husband present. One time when my mother was in bed with a cold and one of father' oldest friends, a very harmless bachelor sat in the bedroom talking to her, Sasha straddled the doorway with a chair and sat in it the whole time as a chaperone.

The winter of Sasha's stay was very cold and snowy, but she thrived on that weather. How bad could it have been after Siberia. She would literally force my two sisters and I to take a walk with her after supper - crunching over the hardpacked snow behind snowbanks she could not see over for about a half hour when we would reach a steamy delicatessen - and lest you think Sasha would buy us hot chocolate or other warming drinks, don't be fooled. Sasha would order a large bottle of ice cold gingerale and insist we drink it, beating her chest all the time to say how good we should feel. She never buttoned her coat no matter what the temperature, but maybe that had something to do with high blood pressure. Because, sometimes Sasha would come down to breakfast in the morning, looking like her bosom had blown up even bigger overnight. It turned out that she was hot and she would put huge turkish towels into cold water, wring them out and stuff them into her bosom to ease the heat. My father used to get angry with her, but it never stopped her.

My older sister and I shared a bedroom on the top floor and Sasha was in the other bedroom, but Sasha's fears were not abated by our nearness. She stuffed the keyholes and the curtain rods with paper and placed huge enamel pots of water around the room so the gas couldn't hurt her. Truly Sasha knew things we didn't.

One day in March - what year I don't know, Sasha left the house without a coat - no one heard from her for a while when she called from Philadelphia. She had promised to buy my sisters and I, rings and it seemed her late husband had relatives in Philadelphia who had a jewelry store. So Sasha with her foreign language dictionaries and her innate though disturbed intelligence had gone to find them. And she did. Sasha probably could have found anyone. My uncle used to go to New York on business and more than once on leaving his hotel room (always the same one), he would find Sasha sitting on the floor in the corridor waiting to see him. Sasha knew he had money so she probably always kept track of his activities.

I don't remember her ever living with us again. I think she was sent to live with a family who were to take care of her.

My father died in late 1945 and in our sorrow we didn't think too much of Sasha or where she was. And like many families, unfortunately we didn't see my father's family too often. Years later we heard she had been hospitalized where one day she washed her eyes with her urine and evidently because she had diabetes, she became blind.

And still later, one day we visited my father's grave in the family lot and sawa blurred cardboard marker indicating Sasha was buried there. No permanent marker has ever been put there and my sisters and I talk about doing it, but so far we haven't. But I did get a puppy two years ago and I named her Sasha and we give her lots of love and affection and cherish her dearly and I am sure Aunt Sasha won't mind being remembered with a dog's name as long as we are giving it what we should have given her.

POSTSCRIPT
January 3, 2003
On reading this over, I became very melancholy, and really wish Sasha's life could have been better. My father was a very loving man, and larger than life, and we were young and our lives so devastated and disrupted that we probably could not have made a difference for her. I know that the reason I gave my beautiful German Shepard her name, was because I had always planned to name a child after Sasha. In the limited year or so she lived with us we loved her and she expressed her love for us, but it was not a happy time for any of us.

********************************************************************
Marjorie Short obtained the death certificate and indeed Sasha died in The Worcester State Hospital on December 28,1952. She is indeed buried in the Monosson plot.... from the records of the cemetery there are 10 burials but 9 plaques. There is also the question of whether she did or did not see her sister. Freida Monosson died in 1940.

Bernie's Pastels

How really great when MYBLOG reaches a family member that I had lost contact with. Such is the case with Bernie, my first cousin on the ARONSON side. His father Jack was my mother's brother. So I was very pleased when I received an e-mail from him recently when I sent out an update to my Aronson-Price group. We have been e-mailing since and besides updating family stuff have discovered similar interests.

As you can see Bernie does some really fabulous pastel work. Bernie hopes to set up a new site for his work but in the meantime I received some nice photos if his work scanned them for the blog.Bernie does commissioned work. You can contact him at pastelb33[@]gmail.com. Please remove the brackets. Here is a link to his album. Bernie's Pastels
